I was deeply saddened to learn today that Ugly Betty creator Silvio Horta, has died aged 45.
As reported by Variety, he was found dead in a Miami motel room on Tuesday from of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A representative confirmed his death, but declined to comment on the nature of it.
Ugly Betty, adapted from the Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fes ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2010 making a star of its lead America Ferrera and was one of my favourite shows of the time.
Horta, previously discussed how certain elements of his own life, including challenging experiences with immigration and sexuality, made their way into the show.
“I think elements of Justin’s character being gay and sort of struggling with his sexuality was definitely — I drew from my own life,” he said in an interview with the Television Academy shared in 2016.
Horta’s family released a statement saying that he “had an ongoing struggle with addiction and depression,” and describing him as a “kind and beautiful man.”
Ugly Betty cast and crew have shared touching tributes on Instagram.
