My Top Five Episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

If you’re reading this blog, I sincerely hope you know how much I adore this show. Buffy is - by far - my favourite TV show of all time. I might even be my favourite - anything of all time.

Buffy for me is art - actually even deeper than art. It has meaning and purpose. Many of my views, and thoughts and choices have been made because of this show. To have Stan stream these episodes, and hopefully show a new Aussie audience this amazing show is a terrific thing for me.

To celebrate, I thought I would list out my top 5 episodes of Buffy of all time. This isn’t going to be easy:

5. Lie to Me (Season 2, Episode 7) Generally an episode that isn’t on many people’s top-episodes list, but this episode means so much to me. I remember watching this episode when it originally aired on Channel 7 back in 1998. 13 year old me, always knew there was something more going on in this episode (more than Cult-members pleading to be made undead) but I couldn’t comprehend. 20-years later, Buffy’s speech to Ford resonates with me so much. You always have a choice.

4. Restless

An episode unlike any others. Through dreams we go far deeper into Buffy and her friends. Open for so much interpretation, but says so much. A piece of art that foreshadows the rest of the series, while still being a coda to the series thus far. Perfect.

3. The Body

8. Without question, I would never suggest watching this episode without watching the previous 90-something episodes before it. Like Restless, this episode is nothing like the episodes before it. Powerful. Emotional. Soul-rocking.

2. Becoming (Parts 1 and 2) (Season 2, Episodes 21+22)

The season finale full of twists, plot and a hell of a lot of character. If season two was about Buffy loosing it’s innocence; the road to growing up, this episode esclates that mission two fold. Big fight scenes, huge changes to the direction of the show. I dare you to watch this episode without balling your eyes for the last 10 minutes. “Close your eyes”

Honourable Mentions: Hush, Once More with Feeling (The Musical!), Prophecy Girl, The Gift, The Prom, Graduation Day, Earshot, Storyteller, School Hard, The Wish, Dopplegangland (+ the other 100 episodes I neglected to mention here) - Please stop reading this and go watch this show.

2. Surprise / Innocence (Season 2, Episodes 12/13) T

echnically it’s the episode Innocence that’s most deserving to be on this list, but Surprise is the episode that sets up this story. When I first watched Innocence and witnessed Buffy go through the most traumatic thing (at the time i thought) possible; I was shaken - I think 20+ years I still am. This is Buffy at it’s peak. And the episode that will absolutely make you an addict to this show.
